A thread on how I feel Capitalism effects the animation industry in a negative way...
1. Capitalism pits animation studios against each other. Making it impossible to treat artists like they should be treated. Even if you think you’re treated well, it’s probably because you’re stepping on someone else to achieve your goals.
2. I am forced to think of my fellow collaborators as employees that work beneath me. If employees of a company were paid like they should, real connections can be made without fear of burning a bridge or loosing what already little they get paid. Capitalism hates unity.
3. Imagine a world where you can make animation without corporations needing to sell it in order for it to be successful. No need for marketing schemes. Animation could organically grow like it should.
4. You might be thinking, “but there are people working at very progressive studios that let artist roam free while getting paid very well”. I have heard stories of these places and their productions. They are mostly negative. Sooner or later the trudge capitalism catches up.
5. Even as a showrunner, which I fuckin love being, I am still a cog in the wheel of a capitalist machine. The fact is that the job is impossibly difficult. Especially if you want to make your work “not suck”. And capitalism will always give you the minimum for its major gain.
Ok, there’s the vent! Anyone else have anything to add on how capitalism destroys an industry? Or even happily debate the subject?
