i warned you about colorization bro. i told u dawg https://twitter.com/vinkjohn/status/1380876964467249156
obviously editing smiles onto khmer rouge victims is an extremely large step beyond basic colorization but in both cases you are falsifying the historical record and those falsified pictures will start to overwrite the actual true data, complicating education & research forever
this stuff is informational pollution, and i cant emphasize enough to non-digital art people how EASY it is to just color over an old photo or faceapp/liquify someone's face enough to fool normies. it's both lazy AND unethical, a cheap parlour trick
in this one he smooths the skin texture of the victim and removes her mustache, making her "prettier" for western consumption. he should be redacted for this
you, the audience, are responsible for encouraging this kind of shit when civilians see a picture like this and go "wow so lifelike!!" when every irish peasant in the frame is an identical hue of spray tan. this is the same colorizer btw
those "neural network" scaled-up and colorized filmstrips are also bad https://twitter.com/atomicthumbs/status/1327789717677457413
one thing thats possible is that Matt Loughrey's Cambodian clients, who asked him to retouch the photos in the first place, also asked him to change the expressions in the photos. if this is the case, it also isnt mentioned in the article
theres a big difference between an irish guy "sprucing up" war crime pics for fun and praise and an irish guy specifically fulfilling a client brief by the relatives of the people in the war crime photos but im not sure which situation has occurred here
either way the colorizations suck on a basic human realism level. bitch doesnt even know about color zones; they never do https://gurneyjourney.blogspot.com/2008/05/color-zones-of-face.html
a hot tip for artists and writers covering those artists is that crowing about an artist being "totally self-taught" is not the W you think it is when the artist sucks so hard at what he does
anyway i have a message window open to the vice author rn and im considering whether or not i want to have a weird and stressful conversation with a stranger today. this is called "self care"
this is SO CORRECT https://twitter.com/shoomlah/status/1381003375433555968
i want to do a "heres how one would colorize a B&W photo more correctly" post but frankly thats an information hazard and im not going to contribute to this nonsense
a really good test would be to get someone who hasnt seen this pic try to colorize an Addam's Family frame and then compare it to this photo https://twitter.com/AHUNGRYMOUTH/status/1381007248433025027
VVVVV https://twitter.com/RipperElse/status/1381008849776205826
its already happening! https://twitter.com/Liriobirdon/status/1381026552541028353
jesus christ https://twitter.com/thorazos/status/1381096535061041153
look how sloppy this is. look how the pink he's slapped onto the lips with a soft photoshop brush is just bleeding out around the vermillion border. he has no idea what hes doing or what humans look like

serious question: isnt this the same thing as that lip sync app everyone was using a few days ago? like literally there are multiple phone app filters that do this, right? and this guy is charging €99 for it? https://www.mycolorfulpast.com/xoculi
his entire career appears to be a grift targeting senior citizens and charging outrageous fees for running old photos through free novelty apps
https://twitter.com/quinnlibson/status/1380954677462794240
every person on his IG is the same color, and all the videos of his "X-Oculi" photo-motion program, which he claims is exclusive and proprietary, are very low res. they actually appear to be around the same resolution as the python script i posted above
matt loughrey claims to have been interviewed about the S-21 photos in french paper Libération, but a search of their website for his name or business name shows hes either lying or misremembering (or their search function is bad) (h/t to parkanoire) https://twitter.com/quinnlibson/status/1380954677462794240
he is also probably using an open source tool called DeOldify to process old photos automatically. the weird orange overlay on the skin here looks exactly the same as all his output https://twitter.com/jprevill/status/1381273854279090189

https://twitter.com/MC_Spacebat/status/1381438593546268673
based on the descriptions matt loughrey has provided a series of journalists and outlets over the years, we think he is probably just rattling off some semi-parseable technobabble relating to the open source AIs and filters hes running and doesnt actually understand any of it
https://twitter.com/WhoresofYore/status/1381312542052614148
i cant really get past how halfassed this stuff is. in this IG post of a colorized stereograph, whatever procedural filter he used failed to colorize parts of the hands, leaving them the original grey. even though it's only two images he didnt bother to fix it.
I TOLD YOU. I HAVE BEEN NATTERING ON ABOUT "COLORIZATION BAD" FOR YEARS. NO ONE LISTENS AND NOW ITS TOO LATE https://twitter.com/gwenckatz/status/1381652071695351810
