Freshwater is one of my favourite books but I& #39;m always scared to read reviews of it because so many of them (even 5 star reviews) contain inaccurate and even harmful language about dissociative disorders like DID/OSDD

Please do enough research to check your reviews for ableism
In case you need a bit of help working out where to start with that research, I& #39;m going to add some resources to this thread!

Also, if you have any questions, please feel free to ask. I& #39;m a singlet but willing to put in the time/emotional energy on behalf of the systems I love.
DID and OSDD are trauma-based dissociative disorders.

DID = Dissociative Identity Disorder (previously known as Multiple Personality Disorder).

OSDD = Other Specified Dissociative Disorder (previously known as DDNOS).

There are lots of wonderful systems out there making educational content about DID & OSDD - e.g. Multiplicity & Me (a.k.a Jess, Jake, Jamie, Ed and Oliver)!

Specifically r.e. Freshwater, please remember that it& #39;s an autobiographical novel - you can learn a lot from Akwaeke Emezi& #39;s own words!

e.g. their upcoming autobiography, Dear Senthuran: https://www.akwaeke.com/dear-senthuran

This website has a lot of information r.e. scientific research on dissociative disorders (with emphasis on DID) for those who find that useful, e.g. these pages on structural dissociation theory: https://did-research.org/origin/structural_dissociation/">https://did-research.org/origin/st...

Adding some more OSDD to this thread... Nat Puff (Left at London) has OSDD-1b, which is like DID but with less/no dissociative amnesia.

Here& #39;s her thread about how writing the song "6 Feet" helped her to reach that diagnosis: https://twitter.com/LeftAtLondon/status/1248869575749332993">https://twitter.com/LeftAtLon...
Next up, terms to avoid.

"Multiple personalities" is outdated, inaccurate, and associated with a lot of stigma against DID/OSDD.

"Personalities" = alters

"Has multiple personalities" = has alters/is a system/is multiple/has a dissociative disorder
"Plural" and "plurality" are also terms to avoid - see he tweet below.

DID and OSDD1 are traumagenic (resulting from trauma).

Endogenic = people who believe they are systems without trauma https://twitter.com/FUGlOMIS/status/1380967408639217666?s=19">https://twitter.com/FUGlOMIS/...
(I forgot to define "singlet" before now even though I said that I am a singlet, oops

Singlet = person who is not part of a system)
