Today I was fortunate to attend the Grand ReOpening of a historical building in #Benghazi. In 1931, Omar alMukhtar was sentenced to death here while sitting in a similar chair in the same spot. It was destroyed during World War II. #Thread #بنغازي
It was rebuilt in the early years of the Kingdom and opened as (المجلس التشريعي #برقة). In attendance front & center (1st 2 pics) my late grandfather Hussain Mazeg.
From there it went on to become the Central Library for the Univ. Of Libya (Benghazi Univ). It was damaged during the Karama. This video by Maher Elgheriani shows the extent of the damage as well as the process of rebuilding: https://fb.watch/4NEQMnBnCd/
With the joint effort between @Benghazimun and @UNDPLibya, it was rebuilt in 2021 and will become the home of a new Public Library and will include a children’s area.
During the ceremony, @NoranButalak presented the interior design ideas for the Library. Really impressed with her work Mashallah.
Local publishers displayed their work in the corridors.
UNDP Libya Rep @gnoto62, Benghazi Mayor Sagar Bujwari, Historian Faraj Najm, Grandson of Omar alMokhtar, Mohamed.
Loved being able to stand in the same spot my Grandfather once stood 64 years ago, with the people responsible for making it happen ❤️ This was the 3rd time it was rebuilt, but hopefully this will be the last time.
