Barcelona before Cruyff:
Barcelona was suffering before Cruyff. It all began after losing the 1961 European Cup Final against Benfica (this was later known as the Bern Curse). Barcelona went in as favorites with players like Luis Suarez, Sander Kocsis and key man Kubala (1/3)
At the final whistle, Barcelona turned out to be the losing side, losing 3-2 after committing unforgivable defensive errors, hitting the post 4 (!) times, and with Benfica defender Angelo Martins stopping a goal with his chest (See Below) (2/3)
After this game, Barcelona let some of it’s greatest players leave, including the star of the team at the time, Kubala. This truly marked the end of an era, and the success and trophies took time to return... (3/3)
Johan Cruyff’s Arrival:
Johan Cruyff joined Barcelona in August of 1973, at the age of 26. Despite him joining in August, he could not make his debut until late October due to bureaucratic problems.
1973/74 Season:
Barcelona started the season poorly, losing 3, drawing 2, and winning 2 of the opening 7 games, and getting knocked out in the first round of the UEFA Cup by Nice. A massive turnaround began from the eighth fixture, when Cruyff made his debut (1/3)
From that moment onwards, Barcelona was great, with a stand-out 0-5 victory against rivals Real Madrid. Due to this remarkable turnaround, Barcelona were named champions of La Liga with 5 matches yet to be played! Johan Cruyff played a vital part, scoring 16 goals, (2/3)
making him the 2nd top goalscorer that season behind Marcial Pina. This La Liga title ended a 14-Year drought for Barcelona. At the time, foreign players were banned from the Spanish Cup meaning Cruyff couldn’t participate. Barcelona lost to Real Madrid in the final (3/3)
Over Cruyff’s 5 Year Stay at Barcelona, he scored 60 goals in 180 Official Matches, and won La Liga (1973/74) and the Spanish Cup (1977/78). His final game was how it should’ve been, a friendly against Ajax, his former club, on the 27th of May, 1978
Cruyff’s impact on Barcelona, both as a player and manager, is incomparable. He is one of if not the greatest club legend Barcelona has ever had
