If one more person tells me I should apply for a tenure clock extension, I am going to scream. For the record TCE is not a solution for COVID. A few reasons why - 1. COVID impacts are not just 1 year, they will continue to extend over 2, 3, even 4 or more years. 1/4
2. Caregivers as well as individuals with disabilities or critical health issues will continue to be isolated by COVID until we as a society reach herd immunity. At least in the US that is going to take far longer than a year. 2/4
3. For people like me (2 TCE for 2 kids), a third would put me so far behind my colleagues I would never make up the lost-earning potential, the lost opportunities, and so much more. I am also already completely out of step with opportunities that are tied to career stage. 3/4
4. Focusing on TCE does nothing for the most vulnerable academics, our contingent faculty. So many of these individuals, that often are the backbone of our undergrad programs, have been hit very hard by the pandemic. I could go on, but will leave it there for now. 4/4
