Well, it’s happened. My old friend @ericmetaxas blocked me on Twitter. My feeble effort to keep him from sliding further down the conspiracy theory rabbit hole has failed. @roddreher - have you been blocked yet? @JohnFea1?
I met Eric in 1998 when we premiered “LB & the Rumor Weed” at a convention. He was writing kids books at the time, and talked about wanting to be the next Dick Cavett. We hired him for a year to try writing for VT, but had to cut him when budgets got tight.
I’d bump into him at conferences, and always enjoyed hanging out. He’s a genuinely funny guy. I was proud of him when his Bonhoeffer book hit it big. He was introducing John Lennox to NYC at Socrates in the City and hanging out with Os Guinness.
Then something shifted. A tweeted selfie of Eric excitedly meeting... Ann Coulter. And then a new book with a cover blurb from... Tucker Carlson. And my friend the Christian thinker morphed into a right wing culture warrior.
Instead of introducing John Lennox or Os Guinness, he MC’d the “Jericho March” in DC last year and introduced the leader of the Oathkeepers militia. I reached out to warn him that some of his Twitter followers were talking about buying ammo. He didn’t respond.
Two weeks ago he tweeted that none of us should get the vaccine. I pushed back, publicly. Apparently that’s why he blocked me. That was the last straw.

It’s sad to see a friend walk down a path you just can’t follow.
