What social norms exist in racially diverse contexts? We examined this in the most racially diverse state in the country: Hawai'i. Turns out people are really race-conscious here and don't adopt colorblind norms as is more typical in the broader US. https://doi.org/10.1177%2F1368430220984228
Why are they so race-conscious? They don't perceive talking about race as a prejudiced behavior, which is typically the underlying rationale for colorblind behavior.
But why are they still so race-conscious?! One possibility is the context! Being in a racially diverse context might foster race-conscious norms! We see some evidence for this...the more racially diverse the place, the less likely people believed taking about race as prejudiced.
Very excited this work is finally out and had an AE that believed in the importance of it!! These findings are important because we know colorblind norms are bad for race-relations! Race-consciousness is necessary to fight racism.
