I see a lot of ppl making similar arguments in regards to how soca music is currently seen, viewed and treaded. This comparison cannot be made. https://twitter.com/queenvictoryy/status/1380661195695386624
The anti African sentiment prevalent at the time was tangible. By virtue of the music being associated with Africa and Africans there was an immediate dislike for it. And it’s sad to say but mainly at the hands of Caribbeans.
When it comes to soca the dislike for the genre if we’re being honest mainly comes from other Caribbean’s (Jamaicans 👀). Jamaican culture has dominated so much of the black British experience to a point where they almost had a monopoly on the culture.
As a result of this. What they (Jamaicans) said goes. And soca is not a music of Jamaica. It is a music associated with and created by many of the other Caribbean islands. In short because many Jamaica’s didn’t/don’t like soca many black brits inherit the same bias’.
