This is so true... I teach at an academic magnet, but a good chunk of kids read slightly below grade level. An AP Social Studies teacher told me a few years ago that he didn’t know how to help kids read better. https://twitter.com/karenvaites/status/1380884331082756099
Guess what happens? A student can get by pretty well without reading- just by listening to the teacher, skimming the questions, watching some video overviews. What I’ve noticed- way less teachers giving reading quizzes or technically requiring kids to read the textbook.
So you end up in a cycle- kids aren’t super proficient readers, so teachers don’t ask them to read, and therefore kids don’t read, and so kids don’t get better at reading.
