“In choosing the members of this commission, the White House appears to have prioritized bipartisanship and star power within the legal academy over choosing people who have actually spent a meaningful amount of time advocating for Supreme Court reforms.” https://twitter.com/voxdotcom/status/1380860642903592960
Largely agree with this @imillhiser take but would also argue that it’s not either or - Biden could have chosen stars within the legal academy AND people who have advocated for reform
Also I’d also say...for true reform, viewpoints outside of the legal elite are essential. We frown when industries dominate appointments onto regulatory agencies that engage in oversight. Likewise courts reform should not be entrusted to the industry with the most to gain.
Adam Bonica and I discuss this at length in our new @CUP_PoliSci book - the legal industry (even at the elite levels) has its own professional and ideological interests. They are not necessarily representative of the public’s interest.
