I always heard that the @OfficialSAT was biased. I decided to dig further for my story this week @TheEconomist
Turns out, we have A LOT more to worry about if we want to make college admissions fairer.. (1/n) https://www.economist.com/united-states/2021/04/08/america-tries-to-figure-out-a-fairer-way-to-select-students

Yes, the SAT/ACT are highly correlated with income (rich kids do better). Black and Hispanic students tend to score lower than White students, and Asian students do best overall (on average). Janet Godwin, CEO @ACT, says this has to do with access to resources, not test bias
But what if we did get rid of these tests? Will things get better.
No. We have a LONG way to go before that.

Without tests, colleges need to focus on other things like essays and extracurriculars. That should be fairer, right?
Wrong. The @pathwayslab at @Stanford found that essay content is more highly correlated with income than the SAT

Ok so maybe extracurriculars are fairer? Wrong again.
A study by @bethanyjnichols at @StanfordSoc found that elite alumni prefer "elite" activities. They liked the cello over the banjo, sailing over soccer, and foreign film club over video games.

So some think we should blow up admissions and start over. @rothstein_jesse recommends a lottery among students who qualify. Others recommend a match system, like doctors matching into residency programs.
But really, we just need a better education system overall
Like @angelbperez, CEO of @NACAC says, we might aim for a meritocracy in college admissions. But until we fix inequalities in education before college, we are not going to make a dent.
