Neoliberal activism packaged as radicalism has become so pervasive in movement spaces in the US, I'm seriously at a loss, as to how to engage in these spaces, save a few organizations committed to mass based organizing like @NYTWA
What is neoliberal activism? It has several features including amplifying middle class formally educated elite as vanguard of social movements who speak for communities. Reliance on market based, conciliatory strategies that are acceptable to funders and establishment powers.
Decision making on issues that impact marginalized communities that are individualized and not accountable, as compared to undergoing some collective decision making or participatory process.
Personalizing what are critical issues about power, positionality and ones adjacency to institutions that perpetuate inequality. Expecting personal friendships exempt folks from critique of their positions.
Reinforcing idea that nonprofits incorporated under c3 are the movement, staff driven activism and policy, not making space or support for groups who are intentionally unincorporated collectives or emerging collective formations.
Centering US and Global North as the lead of movement activism, universalizing strategies to movements in Global South, unwillingness to listen and take lead from organizers in global South.
Thinking that your individual seat at the table without any organized counter-weight will magically bring about structural changes and not cooptation.
Invoking radical thinkers in your rhetoric/messaging but not in practice; policies and proposals are reformist giving the impression of deep political and economic changes when in fact they reinscribe same power asymmetries.
There are many more features to neoliberal activism than what I've outlined here. My interest is to connect with collective formations that are seeking to upend this mode of organizing that's becoming dominant and support those formations. Holla😊
