My dad had a career in retail management & Prince Philip & the Queen visited to open his new store in Staines in 1979.

Aged 21, my dad was trusted with a huge store. He has always taught me hard work pays off. He wasn’t one for academic education but knew what hard work meant.

It was also important for our family (even if I wasn’t born) as you didn’t see many from BAME backgrounds in management. He swept floors aged 16 just to get experience but took an interest, had ideas & progressed. Thankfully his regional manager saw potential.

Not sure about the suit though but he did say he was proud and honoured to show Prince Philip around along with the Queen and it’s a memory he has kept hold off.
