Ok Fluffies. I have something that I want to talk about. Many of you know already, I am vegetarian and passionate about animals. I will admit that I haven’t been to protests, but I have volunteered for beach cleans and litter picks in my area.
As my platform is growing, I am going to speak up more about conservation and not just about plastic straws, but marine life and deforestation. Our planet is suffering and it’s going to directly affect us sooner rather than later. Humans are an incredibly selfish species.
So as a human being you should care about the food you continue to want to eat. I know that not everyone is going to want to change their habits, but you should know what is ACTUALLY happening to get that food on your plate. Here are some facts I want you to know about fishing.
Do you know what deep sea trawl fishing is? It’s a giant net that is dragged along the bottom of the sea floor, destroying everything just to catch fish that is mostly thrown back. The nets are as big as 18 jumbo jets, or the size of St Paul’s Cathedral multiple times over.
Scotland is one of the top farmers in salmon “sustainable” fishing. Sustainable isn’t actually defined universally, so you could think farming only 1000 fish in the Uk is sustainable, but in Japan they can decide 100 fish filled nets is farmed sustainably.
In Scotland, salmon are forced to swim in circles for the rest of their life, and are actually being eaten alive by sea lice because of how much waste is created in one area. You know how pink salmon is in shops? That’s due to coloured feed. Farmers literally choose fish to sell
Based on how pretty the colour is. Like a paint chart for your room. Salmon farmed in this environment actually have dull grey flesh. Don’t trust the labels with the blue tick. They actually can’t guarantee your fish is sustainable and is dolphin safe.
Do you like dolphins? Did you know that they are targeted in Taiji Japan because they are considered as pests due to struggling to catch fish. But it’s actually due to overfishing. This place in the world isn’t alone. Dolphins are frequently used as bycatch on purpose.
Bycatch is defined as “accidental” take. It’s not accidental. 20 dolphins can be purposely caught to catch 3 tuna.
I really want to offer support towards conservation and charity but I actually can’t choose one because there are so many marine ones that actually are hiding a lot. Please consider watching a documentary on @netflix called SEASPIRACY. To be FULLY warned.
This film contains violent filming, and distressing images. Please consider watching this as it really points out so many things that are wrong with the fishing industry.
Every week I’m going to talk about conservation and raise awareness as the more we talk about it, the more we shout about it the better. #raiseawareness #dolphinsafe #sustainablefishing #conservation #Seaspiracy
