Wilayah Sarawak reported the highest Covid19 case in Malaysia again today & reach its all time high #555. It was the best state to handle the spread of Covid19 & was once praised by @DGHisham.

So what went wrong? [A thread]
1️⃣ PKP in Sibu was lifted too early.

Sibu is the central region of Sarawak & the home of Kluster Pasai. After 4 weeks of lockdown, SDMC decided to lift the lockdown in Sibu because people were struggling to put food on the table. The daily case was still high at that time.
It was a big mistake to lift the lockdown before we could eradicate the virus. Since then, the virus has spread like wildfire to all 39 other districts in Sarawak. Today alone, Sibu recorded 115 cases — more cases than 9 states in Malaysia.
2️⃣ Home Surveillance Order (HSO)

It all started with this. Sarawak is the only state that practice 14 days quarantine in hotel when you enter the state. However, last December, many Sarawakians wanted to return home for Christmas but there were no more rooms left.
The government trust the rakyat to follow Home Quarantine SOPs but not everyone follow the SOPs strictly.

This had caused several clusters like Kluster Pasai, Kluster Mador, Kluster Jelita. Kluster Mador was the first cluster that spread in the longhouse/rural areas.
3️⃣ Red zone allowed to travel to nearby districts

Remember when the federal government allow red zone districts under PKPB to cross-state?

What happened next? In a month, the virus from Selangor spread to the entire Semenanjung. That’s the exact thing happening in Sarawak now.
Considering Sarawak is a huge region which is as big as Semenanjung. It is only wise to disallow red zones to travel out of district to stop the spread.

Currently, red districts are allowed to enter green & yellow districts freely within the same zone. https://twitter.com/datukhensem/status/1311968794495995905
4️⃣ SOP for Social Gathering

According to the latest SOP by SDMC, social gathering are allowed in green & yellow zones.

Where is the logic to allow social gatherings in green zone when the event can be attended by high-risk people from Red Zone? Point 3️⃣ is a major problem!
5️⃣ Different Places, Different Rules

SDMC doesn’t allow pasar malam in red zone districts. But why does red-zones like Kuching get exemptions?

If they believe Bazaar Ramadan is high-risk, why is Pasar Malam different?
The fight for covid is not a one-man show. Every district must work together with SDMC to stop the spread. Policies must be consistent throughout the state. Stop any platform that could potentially cause spread to happen. This will only prolonged the worsening situation.
6️⃣ Leaders not setting good example

Swkians know how strict is the SOP here. For instance, we still practice zig-zag table sitting at restaurants here.

It is noted everyone took swab test before the PM event. But if the VIPs don’t follow SOP, how to expect rakyat will follow?
7️⃣ Asymptomatic Patients

80% of positive cases in Sarawak has NO SYMPTOMS. It means they are HEALTHY. They don’t have fever, sore throat or cough but they are POSITIVE (virus carrier) & CAN infect YOU!

Photo below is the summary of positive cases in Sarawak the last few days.
Asymptomatic people is a major threat to STOP THE SPREAD of Covid19 in Sarawak.

No amount of thermometer check in the mall can detect the virus. The healthy friends you hangout yesterday COULD be positive without you knowing. Most of the time, only the elderly has symptom/fever.
The reason being Sarawak has high asymptomatic cases could be SDMC policy that is still doing widespread testing for close contacts without symptoms.

They must not stop doing this. Pretending the case is low bc they stop testing asymptomatic people is just lying to yourself.
8️⃣ Big Extended Family Gatherings

⚰️Funerals
👰Weddings
🎉BBQ/Birthday

The main cause of clusters in Sarawak are social gatherings with FAMILIES like eating together during meal time & not wearing mask with family members.

Do you wear mask visiting family members? 🤔💭
9️⃣ Interdistrict & Subdistrict Travel

With the challenges we have with No. 3️⃣, 4️⃣, 7️⃣ & 8️⃣, No.9️⃣ will be the catalyst of the spread-out.

By right, Limbang & Lawas should be the LAST GREEN ZONE in Sarawak. Why? These 2 districts are like isolated islands.
Before pandemic, Sarawakians travel to these 2 districts through Brunei from Miri. Now, Brunei has imposed travel restriction & there is no proper road to Limbang. One of the reasons, Miri & Limbang is separated by Gunung Mulu Reserve (a protected UNESCO World heritage site).
Today, one kampung in Limbang is already under PKPD. The first ever PKPD in Limbang!

How did an isolated place have the virus?

Someone from Sabah?
No. Because either you are from Semenanjung or Sabah by land or air, you need to do 14 days quarantine in Sarawak & take swab test.
Essential services worker that go to Limbang from Miri by land? 🚗🚛

Nope. If you want to enter Brunei, you need to show your negative PCR swab test result before you can pass-by.

The answer: AIRPORT (Flights from Sarawak) ✈️✈️✈️
Yes, the basic data & facts speaks for themselves. Swab test before district travel is very necessary in Sarawak now.

Lawas has 2 imported cases.
Limbang has 6 imported cases.

If Import-C cases is not detected at early stage, it will cause clusters at green zone. Test before ✈️
1️⃣0️⃣ Schools must be close in Sarawak.

Ministry of Education must work together with KKM. Please stop saying schools are safe to open with SOP.

There are too many positive cases in schools the last 30 days. It’s too many that you have to squint your eyes to read the photos.
The longer we wait to act, the longer it takes to flatten the curve. Help reduce the burden of frontliners needing to do swab test & contact tracing in schools. The amount of swab test slots available in Sarawak is limited. Just close down physical schools & continue online NOW!
This is when you realize how important is Education Autonomy to Sarawak. Currently, education is under Ministry of Education (Federal Government agency). They decided that school is safe to reopen.

If we have the autonomy, our local leaders could make their own decision anytime.
1️⃣1️⃣ Prolonged PKPB, No New Strategy

PKPB has been extended 7 times in Sarawak this year. That is a total of 14 weeks of Partial Lockdown. PKPB, PKPB, PKPB without tackling the main issue above.

More & more districts are turning red now & positive cases continue to rise! 📈
1️⃣2️⃣ Zon

In reality, there is no more green zone left in Sarawak if interzone travel is still allowed.

Example: Zon Bintulu

Bintulu town has 870 cases but Tatau & Sebauh has 6 & 27 cases. It’s just a matter of time the virus from Bintulu spread to those districts.
It already happen last week. Not in Bintulu, but in Zon Kuching.

Kuching is red zone. There was a wedding in Kampung Binyu, Kuching. And it was attended by people from green zone (Asajaya). Weeks later, the event found to cause a new cluster & Asajaya is now yellow zone.
