Claim: "India was supposed to be the vaccine factory of the world".

Says who? Producing 25% of the global supply is trivial? Is the rest of the world full of chumps?

Claim: GOI didn't place an order early enough.

Even if the claim is taken at face value, that means that consumption of 25M doses was delayed, too small a number to be of much consequence.

Claim: We didn't invest in vaccine production across the rest of the country.

Why do you need geographic diversification - vaccines not groundwater. Do facilities exist at SII's scale that were not harnessed?

Claim: US pumped tons of money into private pharma companies

Is the most innovative country in the world, with a GDP/capita 30x of ours, and a track record of stellar public-private collaboration, going to be your benchmark for "bungling"?

Let's let this sink in - we are producing 1/4th of the world's vaccines. We're getting away with keeping it all for ourselves for now. We're the only country south of $10k/capita GDP to have production facilities.

The only thing bungled here is competent journalism.

Now if SII needs any funds or facilities, GOI should be cutting them blank checks yesterday. Doing otherwise would be classic penny-wise, multi-trillion-dollar GDP foolish. But let's make that case with a modicum of competent integrity.
