ok, since not even educational programs know how to treat them properly, lets talk about it!
this thread is from not only a reptile owner, but an avid researcher since they are my special interest(s.)
some common issues i see within zoos are habitats being too small, crowded, or having animals that cannot co-habitate be in co-habitation!
the reasoning for this sadly is lack of education and also the stigmatism that surrounds many reptiles, because a “scary, dangerous creature doesnt deserve proper care” right?
many “educational” channels mishandle and taunt their animals, such as the tiktok account @/thereptilezoo which promotes the mistreatment of many animals.
somethings ive noticed from the account:
1. mishandling of turtles, lizards, and snakes
2. lack of enrichment in habitats
3. lack of space in habitats
4. poor care from workers
5. promoting fellow accounts that mistreat animals
6. ripping snakes from their eggs
this is not the only “educational” account that promotes this, many youtube channels due to the shock value and profit.
the most notable is brian barczyk. he taunts, teases, and touches his animals for clickbait, makes them bite him, and breeds them uncontrollably for his own profit. his enclosures are horrific. they are so overcrowded, im talking 10 lizards per a 2x1 tub.
many of his animals have constant respiratory infections and have passed away under his care. his burmese python sunshine has been sick many times, she has died due to his care and he replaces her. his care was so poor that she not only developed severe respiratory ++
++ infections but also jaw rot, and she was kept in what looks like a 10x4 bin/tub. no uvb or heat mat, no hides, nothing. a bin/tub.
he also supports, endorces, and breeds many snake breeds which are inhumane. such as the spider ball python morph, which causes neurological issues within snakes, like corkscrewing. these snakes also have poor aim when eating and tend to attack & eat themselves. ++
++ they even wobble and cant hold themselves straight. this breed has already been outlawed in the UK, but that doesnt mean anything to him, because these snakes are a giant profit, selling from $500 to $2000 for each snake.
there is also the super cinnamon morph, which causes kinks in the snakes spine, aka locked joints. the vertebrate are stuck in a zigzag pattern which paralyzes the snake and stops their digestive system from working. once again, this is all for his $500 to $1000 profit.
so, you may be wondering, wheres an actual good place to learn from? theres snake discovery, shes not the best but is better than most, her tanks could be better but thats my only critique. or emerald scales, a reptile rescue rehabilitation channel.
there is also mike dane who critiques these bad reptile channels! sadly, theres not many good channels for reptiles, but those 3 cover a wide variety of how to care, whos good and whos bad.
what r some good ways to care for reptiles? well, depending on ur reptile it may be different. but every reptile should be able to stretch out completely in their enclosure, and then add 10 feet to that on either side. secondly, check ur pet weekly for mites, theyre common.
third, BODY LANGUAGE if ur reptile is running from u, hissing, snapping at you, etc. LEAVE IT ALONE, PLAY ANOTHER DAY. fourth, reward ur pet give it treats when ur happy about something its done. fifth, check with a specialist at least once a year to make sure everythings okay!
sixth. DONT IMPULSE BUY. when purchasing u need to have a tank set up prior to the animals purchase. seventh. its a living creature, not a toy. do not treat it like shit, duh. eighth, wait for it to warm up to you, the key to a healthy relationship is understanding
please just,,, dont read the petsmart manual and think ur fine??? the person who wrote those improperly cares for them in store.
i hope this threads been somewhat informative and good, please chevk out the channels i listed and follow us for snake content :] were a DID system that loves reptiles yeah yeah http://mttkts.carrd.co  http://cakesys.carrd.co
