So I wanna talk about the fast fashion industry. I always see people complaining to small apparel business owners to drop their prices, but there’s alot of issues with that and I’ll try to touch on all of them. (1/8)
Ok so let’s address sweatshop labor. So sweatshop labor is used by fast fashion companies, sweatshop labor basically means any kind of labor that violates labor laws and workers are extremely underpaid making as little as $2 an hour and in prison labor around 12 cents a/h(2/8)
because they severely underpay their workers they’re able to make what they sell super cheap, or in some cases they overprice it just for the brand name because are willing to pay alot for ‘designer’ or expensive brands(3/8)
Before the late 90’s fast fashion wasn’t really a thing and there wasn’t such a mass production and waste of clothing every season. Now days clothes are made with less quality and become worn and torn sooner because the companies want you to spend more money(4/8)
Back then people didn’t buy as much clothes as they do now because 1) clothing items were more ‘expensive’ or rather fairly priced because they paid workers not starving wages(5/8)
2) because they didn’t need to buy so many clothes because clothing pieces would last a long time. Think about that refrigerator your grandma has thats been around from since the 80’s/90’s and still works ok. Yeah its like that (6/8)
Also, when clothes don’t sell they’re almost always cut up and thrown away since they couldn’t make any profit and no longer have value. (7/8)
This thread isn’t to call anyone out but rather to inform. Just do what you can! If you can support small businesses/clothing shops, go for it! Thrifting is also often cheaper than buying new as well! (8/8)
