Court expansion is restitution, not retribution. Americans have voted Dem in 7 of last 8 national elections. Rs invented a principle to deny Obama a seat, then Trump *lost popular vote* but got to fill the seat, and another, and then Rs violated their own 2016 principle for a 3rd
Not to mention the two seats George W. Bush filled. He won the popular vote for his second term but likely wouldn’t have if not for the fact that Republicans on the Supreme Court declared him the winner of the 2000 election, in which he lost the popular vote.
Not to mention the fact that Trump and his allies tried to use the stolen Supreme Court to steal the 2020 election, because they assumed after Bush v. Gore that that’s what the Supreme Court is for
Not to mention all the other anti-democratic (small d) behavior of Republican leaders and supporters, from massive gerrymanders to voter suppression to opposing democracy for plurality-black DC to The Big Lie to storming the Capitol. It’s all connected.
Democrats should act in good faith toward every American, including those who disagree with us. That doesn’t mean we have to sacrifice true democracy for our own supporters in order to appease the other side. Appeasement is not the answer. Nor is waiting another generation.
