The end of AoT was interesting to say the least. So much happened in that final chapter & after rereading that chapter 5 times over 2 days I have a lot of final thoughts on Eren’s character & the final chapter.
Eren’s character arc definitely wasn’t ruined to me in the final chapter. I’m glad Eren got to be vulnerable with his best friend at the end. You can even see him joking/being himself around Armin, I’m glad he got a chance to be himself during this final conversation with Armin
Eren literally accomplished the major goal he set out to achieve, which was to free the Eldians from the curse, which was alluded to all the way back in chapter 122 when Eren told Ymir he would “put an end to this world” that King Fritz created
This final chapter we find out Ymir’s curse persisted because she loved the king. This might be difficult to understand, but there have been many well documented cases of people who were abused falling in love with their abusers, even slaves loving slave masters bc of trauma
Ymir was manipulated by the king since she was a child. She even died for him just so he could live. The reason she chose Mikasa is because of her undying loyalty to Eren & to see if Mikasa (the one who would always risk her life for Eren) would k*ll him to save herself
This was something Ymir wasn’t able to do, which is why she identifies with Mikasa. Mikasa is someone who deeply loves Eren the whole story & is his protector, so her k*lling Eren would be the only outcome that would sway Ymir & why we see Ymir smiling here when Mikasa does this
Ymir’s curse being lifted literally coincides with the goal Eren wanted for his friends—which was for them to live their lives to the fullest. This was foreshadowed Post-Marley
Eren went through so many cycles of depression, self-isolation, self-loathing, & even ADMITTED to Armin he tried to push them away by being distant so he could follow this path that would lead to King Fritz’s world being ended & set his friends up as the heroes that defeated him
Eren throughout the story is telling himself to keep moving forward because he has to convince himself not to waver since he truly wanted to live on with Mikasa. This isn’t something that suddenly happened this ch, Eren literally asked Mikasa how she felt about him in a flashback
Mikasa even wonders if she answered differently to Eren’s question, would the outcome have been different. Eren truly loved her & wanted to live longer, but he understood his 4 years of happiness with Mikasa would not equal a life filled with happiness for his friends.
Eren was never 100% heartless like people portray him out to be. He literally has a whole breakdown because he knows what he is going to do to everyone & we are shown this thru his memory of Ramzi & also learn more about how Eren can see visions & a timeline of the future
When Eren says “I don’t know why, but I wanted to do that.” He isn’t literally saying he doesn’t know why tf he has to protect paradis. He’s referring to wanting to annihilate everything on earth. This is a personal, separate goal from his protection of the island
Eren grew up extremely traumatized. His wish to leave every surface on the earth a “blank plain” is a reference to the entire world & how horrible it is. Eren’s wish for freedom from this wrong and broken world by destroying it all is more symbolic than anything
Eren saw the outcome of Mikasa’s decision through the paths & saw mikasa k*lling him in the end. This chapter confirms he saw Mikasa’s decision was what led to Ymir stopping the curse so that’s why he wanted to ensure she felt unwanted by him, otherwise she wouldn’t k*ll him—
—because he knows how much he means to her. If Eren didn’t treat Mikasa this way, the curse would have never ended because Mikasa wouldn’t k*ll Eren otherwise. Ymir is the one with all the power, her curse would have persisted if she wasn’t convinced otherwise
Moving away from Eren, I wanted to speak on how beautiful this moment Levi had was. Humanity’s strongest really fulfilled his mission in the end & had a perfect ending and got happiness for the first time after so many tragedies & living a hellish life since birth. So beautiful
Also my INNOCENT son Falco made it out alive, who woulda thought 😭 I dont even wanna get started on Reiner so ima just steer away from that whole character subject lmao, im sure somebody on the TL has expressed similar feelings to Reiner’s storyline already
Historia’s daughter & Eren sharing a death date/birth date was meant to be powerful symbolism but imo it kind’ve fell flat considering Historia and her storyline was pushed aside for a GOOD amount post time-skip
I still love Historia & Mikasa respectively but feel like they both deserved more time on panel with fleshed out thoughts. Historia more-so than Mikasa because Mikasa had more than her... but i still felt they both deserved more build up considering their major role in the story
All in all, it was an amazing series I’ll remember forever. So many incredible moments & the writing was so great at times I was starting to wonder if Isayama was a machine. Hindsight is 20/20 so certain things are easy to point out now but I believe the story was incredible
Also, Jean surviving? Literary masterpiece. I must thank Eren & Mikasa for saving my goat in the end. Jean will go down as one of my favorite characters of all time & him cooking Reiner’s goofy ass up one last time was sensational
Since this is the end my top 10:
Jean
Eren
Erwin
Levi
Historia/Mikasa tied
Ymir (not the founder)
Hange
Reiner
Zeke/Grisha
Honorable mention is Annie (After S1 Annie was top 3 but she was gone so long that I gotta put her down here)
