So like, what is the official definition of homophobia? Google says it's discrimination against homosexuals, but the way most people use it makes me think Google is wrong.
Oxford Learner's Dictionary says "a strong prejudice (unreasonable dislike) against gay people"
Oxford Reference: "Negative attitudes towards homosexual people and homosexuality which may be manifested in discrimination, hostile behaviour, or hate crimes."
Merriam Webster: "irrational fear of, aversion to, or discrimination against homosexuality or gay people"
A phobia (according to Google) is "an extreme or irrational fear of or aversion to something." Within this definition of a phobia, we find "extreme/irrational" and "fear/aversion"
The only definition which takes this into account is Merriam-Webster's definition. So, based on Merriam-Webster's definition, are Christians homophobic?
The Bible teaches that homosexuality is a sin, both in the Old and New Testaments. While the since replaced Mosaic Law spelled it out in no uncertain terms, the principles of the Bible that apply to all believers still condemn homosexuality.
In the beginning, when God made mankind, He exclusively ordained heterosexual marriage through Adam and Eve (Genesis 2:24).
"Therefore shall a man... cleave unto his wife," not a man cleaving unto his husband, and not a woman cleaving unto her wife.
So we've established that homosexual marriage is not ordained by God, and it is well-known that adultery (sexual relations before or outside of marriage) is a sin.
Here is the last piece to the puzzle: "Aren't homosexuals married if they say the vows?" The answer is no.
In Mark 10, while speaking on divorce, Jesus says, "What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder." The key idea here is that God is the one who joins together a married couple.
The marriage vows are made in God's presence; therefore, if homosexual marriage isn't God-ordained, why would he join together homosexuals in marriage?
To summarize, based on biblical principles, homosexuality is a sin because it is adultery.
"So Christianity IS homophobic!" I hear you incorrectly concluding ahead of me. And this same conclusion is what so many falsely conclude. This conclusion is how they justify their persecution of Christians concerning this topic.
Read Merriam-Webster's definition of homophobia closely: "irrational fear of, aversion to, or discrimination against homosexuality or gay people." We will construct our final conclusion based on this definition.
First of all, the only pieces of the definition we need are "irrational aversion to homosexuality." We're certainly not afraid of it, and it is a sin to discriminate against anyone, no matter their background or their sin. (Romans 2:11)
Based on the biblical explanation I've just given you, the aversion is not irrational. As Christians, we should be averse to all sin; so we rationally will be averse to homosexuality because it is a sin.
In conclusion, the definition of homophobia does not apply to Christian beliefs.
It is not an irrational fear.
It is not discrimination.
It is a rational aversion based on biblical principles.
