Maybe I should collect a thread of some of the horrible things that are happening in academia and show the thread to anyone who wants to apply for grad school. The positive stuff gets a lot of publicity, but there is a lot of toxic stuff too.
#1 profs who are extremely unprofessional with their subordinates and students. Their management backs them up even when there is evidence. https://twitter.com/UpFromTheCracks/status/1380617678797348873?s=19
#2 profs who are openly racist against people (more importantly, students) from a certain country, due to their dislike of the country's political actions. They get backed up by univ management. https://twitter.com/niloufar_s/status/1379900515425775616?s=19
#3 professional institution gaslights junior researcher for months on end about researcher going public about inappropriate reviews. Person heading gaslighting later runs for institution chair position https://twitter.com/sangeetha_a_j/status/1362819246066077701?s=19
Two: suicide

#4 student commits suicide because prof pressures him to fake details for paper. Professional institution investigates (after first denying) this and finds it true. Refuses to name who was involved in the case. https://twitter.com/sigarch/status/1358873198222311427?s=19
I'm sure there is more. Please add as you see fit. Just putting this together is exhausting and depressing (imagine the lived experience for the people who undergo this)

The aim is not to dissuade people from going to grad school. There are certainly positives, which is why I'm still here. But go into this with your eyes wide open.
