I've been thinking a lot about Disney's "Hunchback of Notre Dame". Mostly, why? Why that story? Why them? Was it because they wanted to make oscar-bait animation movies? This and Pocahontas are just... baffling choices to me.
If they wanted to elevate animation, why not take a fable and give it depth? Why take a HEAVY source and lighten it instead? The pastoral from "Fantasia" had pegasus and fairies and managed to be beautiful as hell, why do this?
I think the talking gargoyles are the rock bottom of Disney comedic relief, but I'm not an expert. I really hate the fat one, he's immediately making fart noises. It's... atrocious. (this thread is now me live-tweeting Hunchback by the way)
