i feel like people are getting super offended over something that doesnāt affect them. this is a case where iād understand it, but if youāve never had to worry about a family member or someone close to you experience such atrocities, please stop.
personally, i could fall under that category because iām fortunate enough to be white passing, by my mum and her family arenāt, and even though iām white passing, iām still asian, and seeing shit on the daily irks me every time.
regarding the ājokeā, itās just not a joke at all. it implies that all asian people, no matter if they went to asia or not, had mysteriously somehow contracted a deadly virus that we donāt have the cure for. it opens the floodgates for more unnecessary racist hate crimes.
i canāt count the amount of times iāve seen covid related hate crimes. thereās been so many that when i see another one i just think āhere we go againā. it gets talked about, people speak up for a day, and everyone stops caring.
techno implying that asian people āhave powerā is just flat out wrong. there are asian-americans who experience hate crimes despite never leaving the united states. this virus reinforces the stereotype of ātheyāll eat anything that is an animalā and it fucking sucks.
to be seen as someone whoāll eat a bat or a dog or a cat when iāve never thought of trying it sucks because it sounds vile but just because iām chinese people think thatās how i think.
chinese people have always been the butt end of the joke. āthey all eat dogā. āthey all eat catā. ātheyāll eat anything that is an animalā. never has that been funny nor will it ever be. yet itās so normalised that iāve just given up and donāt care anymore.
racism towards asian people has been extremely normalised and the day people realise that itās not a good thing and that it shouldnāt be normalised is the day my sleep schedule goes back to normal.
techno is someone in a position of power, not just because of his race, but because he has a platform. if he doesnāt address this, then heāll have a fanbase that supports his racist and xenophobic comments, and i donāt think technotwt wants that
in conclusion, technoās ājokeā was distasteful and not funny in the slightest. his statement reinforces racist stereotypes, which should be enough of a reason to apologise.
