I made a jokey TikTok about how I don’t find writing enjoyable and someone commented like “well then why are you a writer?!” And I gotta tell you like, this line of questioning makes me absolutely bonkers
A big part of why I didn’t think I could be a writer is because of the way so many writers talk about it as if they love it, they NEED to do it, it’s so easy, they have a muse, they access some alternate plane where their characters speak to them, etc. I wish that were me!
But it’s not! I’m really good at writing, it’s my dream, and I love HAVING written, but the ACT of writing I find challenging every single time! That’s probably what keeps it interesting for me honestly! And that’s OKAY. You can find writing hard or a slog and still love it.
We expect this extra emotional thing out of creators that allows us to be exploited for our work, like if we do it we must LOVE it more than anything and therefore we will do it for less money than it’s actually worth. At the end of the day it’s awesome but it is still WORK
I’m sure skilled tradesmen who are excellent at their jobs and truly love their career don’t always LIKE the day-to-day of what they do, but we don’t find that shocking or anything. It just bums me out. If writing is hard for you or not ~fun always that’s okay man
Anyways whatever some rando got to me on TikTok so congrats bruh but like. Also there’s a lot of nuance to this job, especially when I have to do like 800,000 things at the same time to make a solid living at it. Let people be grumpy
Me at 10pm writing the 156th line in a row where I have to figure out how to write "Reloading!" just SLIGHTLY differently on an Excel spreadsheet: yes I would much rather be doing this than drinking a margarita in Hawaii right now
