Ok but what if Peter Parker is a problem now?
What if the casual acceptance (insistence) of the self sabotaging martyr who refuses to grow up and is beholden to this role has made him completely outdated? Especially in a landscape with Miles Morales, Mark Grayson, etc.
Even though Clark Kent arguably established the foils of being a superhero and how it intersects their lives as a source for drama, Peter really did basically run with this full tilt. And while it was commendable in the beginning, it is becoming his only character.
Peter's inability to maintain a healthy personal life was nice and all for early serialized fiction the genre has more or less evolved from that kind of conventional story telling. Hell, Peter's reluctance to allow Aunt May into his life just feels misguided and disrespectful.
Looking through his current run and what exactly does he have going on in his life? How come the teenaged Miles Morales has a functionally healthier life than Peter? Or comes off as the more mature?
It's really not charming when the late 20's Peter is still acting like an idiot.
Maybe I have a bad case of:
"Oh shit, I was just reminded of that scene in BND where Flash laments how Peter is a massive disappointment and now I miss JMS"
But come on, even the MCU Spider-man has a healthier relationship with Aunt May and it feels nice.
And this is why I roll my eyes whenever fans decry MCU Spider-man for not being "poor enough" or not quantifiably suffering enough. Or forced to occupy the same point in his life.

Because that's what Spider-man should always be: misery porn for middle class white people.
Spider-man is really a metaphor for the fruitless endeavor of middle class people who try to build themselves out of their standing getting harshly swatted back into their status quo by a depressed man who hides his pain through quips and a mask.
I don't know, I'm sure I'll get Spider-man fans on my case for this, but even if the main conceit of the guy is:

We know how it feels to be picked on, suffering or bullied, but if we hide behind a mask we can also be... bullied and picked on by the world at large.

Is that good?
Come on, this is why I praise the PS4 Spider-man for being a slightly more idealistic version of 616 Pete. He has problems but comes off as an upbeat dude who LOVES his job. He has set backs but he learns to grow. He is also capable of being a mentor and a dork.
I also feel like the "Peter Parker is a loser" thing has pretty much been addressed, examined, deconstructed and fixed thanks to Peter B Parker from Spider-verse that recognizes that at this point, he either HAS to learn to get over himself or he needs to move on.
And that dude had it WAY harder than whatever Doc Slott did to Pete in BND. His life was a fucking mess. And he still realized he has to grow up and be an adult.

I don't know anymore. I guess if Marvel and his fans insist on making him Peter Pan then you can have him.
I guess I just outgrew Peter Parker.
