Today's Stats Can numbers show John Horgan continues to botch economic recovery, as majority of British Columbians are only $200 away from not being able to pay their bills; BC’s jobs landscape increasingly reliant on part-time jobs; still no private sector jobs plan. #bcpoli 1/7
53% of British Columbians are $200 away from not being able to pay their bills (up 14% from Dec) and 27% report they are already insolvent with no money to cover their payments at month-end, according to an MNP report released just yesterday. Where’s John Horgan? #bcpoli 2/7
WOMEN & YOUTH continue to be disproportionately impacted by pandemic: young women are the most unemployed demographic at 12.9%, and the youth unemployment rate remains high at 12.1%. Makes John Horgan’s recent finger-pointing at youth even more cringeworthy. #bcpoli 3/7
TOURISM, ACCOMMODATION & FOOD SERVICES down 25,000 jobs since Feb 2020 – not including the impact of recent new health orders. NDP shell games, botched programs, and catchphrases don’t cut it anymore – people and small businesses need financial support now. #bcpoli 4/7
RELIANCE ON PART-TIME JOBS: All March job gains were part-time as B.C. lost 6,700 full-time jobs in the month. Part-time jobs up 59,500 & full-time jobs down 39,700 since pre-pandemic levels in Feb 2020. No wonder so many British Columbians are stretched to the brink. #bcpoli 5/7
RELIANCE ON PUBLIC SECTOR JOBS: NDP has grown public sector by 51,400 jobs since Feb 2020 & private sector jobs are down 42,900 during same period. Let that sink in for a minute. Long-term economic recovery must have full-time private sector jobs recovery leading way. #bcpoli 6/7
HIDDEN UNEMPLOYMENT rate is 10.7% vs. standard unemployment rate of 6.9%. Hidden unemployment includes unemployed plus those who have given up looking for work, and/or have fewer hours/less shifts. Think restaurant, hospitality, retail workers-plus lots of women/youth #bcpoli 7/7
