I sometimes look back to my essay that got me accepted into University of Bristol, @BristolUni. Back then, my future was perfect, I had secured a place in a globally prestigious uni and was on track to becoming a renowned scientist, bringing glory to my country. (THREAD,1/9)
Then the burmese coup happened. I felt like everything that I had worked hard for for years had been threatened of being stripped away from me. Now my future is murky, I don’t even know if I will survive and it seems like my days are numbered. (2/9)
This junta has been notorious for murdering, torturing and raping civilians as weapons of war. They have been doing this for decades to our ethnic people and now they are terrorising the cities of Burma, the same cities that they grew up in and swore to defend. (3/9)
They targeted medical workers, arresting and publicly torturing them for daring to assist wounded peaceful protestors as well as shooting at ambulances. At the same time raiding schools and hospitals to use as military bases. (4/9)
If we go out even to buy groceries, we risk being arbitrarily shot in the head or be arrested and tortured. If we hide at home, they shoot bullets at our windows, break down our barricades and search every corner while looting every valuables they can find. (5/9)
If lucky, we get to sleep in our own homes for another day. We live in a country where child rapists and serial killers walk freely outside prison walls while pro-democracy protestors are sentenced to death. (6/9)
The news presenters with beautiful hair and perfect makeup with flowers beside them eerily announce these death sentences with a smile. Dozens of my people are being slaughtered everyday yet the best the international community could do was to dish out words of condemnation.(7/9)
Words that are meaningless to the imbecile generals of the junta who only understands violence. Advocating for Human Rights is fruitless when nobody is willing to enforce it and some even support genocide for short term economical benefits. (8/9)
This is our reality, and it will slowly become your reality too if you fail to defend democracy whenever it is threatened. One day, there would be no one to scream to for help as democracy slowly (maybe even rapidly) ceases to exist. (9/9)

Reason I tagged my uni is, universities have strong connections to lawyers, politicians, doctors and scientists etc. Bristol for example even has connections with the Royal Family. If a university says something, it resonates in the entire country. I hope other students do it too
