Two weeks into my new gig @Shopify! 🤯

First things first: Onboarding here is AMAZING so THANK YOU to everyone who has made onboarding amazing. Thread of learnings and pleasant surprises so far. 🧵
Shopify is truly mission-driven and merchant-obsessed. 🎯 We're constantly asking:

- How can we make commerce better for everyone?
- What is best for our merchants?
- And how do we arm the rebels when tech also enables monopolies and centralization?
One of our values is "build for the long-term." Doing things right matters. We want to be a 100-year company. 💯 This matters a lot to me, especially as an engineer.
Shopify has chosen to "default to open internally" - and built the tooling for this. Different companies make different choices here - highlighted recently by @DanRose999 in this thread https://twitter.com/DanRose999/status/1362237410742919169 - but I love Shopify's approach. It makes remote work.
There's a company-wide "no meetings Wednesday," and the leadership team frequently reminds us of the maker schedule. 👍 http://www.paulgraham.com/makersschedule.html
I didn't know what "cargo culting" was before joining - now I know it as one of a small constellation of key "mental models." 🧠 Shopify sees the world through these models, and I think they enable better decisions. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cargo_cult
Least surprising and best of all: Shopifolk are amazing!

I'll continue to share what I'm learning, but there's also a lot I can't share: "default to open internally" but "default to secrecy externally." If you want in, let me know! Shopify is hiring 2021 engineers in 2021! 🚀
