When I explain the Zach and Nairo situation to literally ANYONE not in the Smash community, every single time they have been confused and concerned Nairo has been fully integrated back into the community without a second thought due to his settlement announcement.
What I have noticed from the community's response is that Nairo, the beloved top player, is a difficult person for anyone in the community to express concerns about. His previous intimate relationship with Zach that there were multiple witnesses too has largely been swept away
And I understand why. Whenever someone questions why Nairo was involved with a 15 yr old prior to assault, people will say you are blaming him for Zach's actions. And that is a huge issue. It prevents the tough, necessary discourse of what safety in the Smash community looks like
Someone who was assaulted can ALSO have had inappropriate contact with the person who assaulted them at some point. Both things can be true. It doesn't mean Nairo in any way is to blame for the attack. It means that this situation requires a lot of nuance to understand.
And so far the response has largely been reactionary and binary in analysis. Which makes sense because this community has a deep love for Nairo, and wants the best for him, including not critically analyzing his behavior with Zach outside of the assault.
My DMs have been blown up by Smashers who were deeply alarmed to see Nairo's popular stream yesterday. I want you all to know you aren't the only ones who are concerned with the way the community is handling this situation.
I want the best for Nairo. I'm glad he has support and is going to therapy. I do think his reentry has largely been based on his popularity rather than a thoughtful plan for how to address larger community concerns about relationships between adults and minors that was normalized
