Today, NBA Top Shot hit $500M in Marketplace Sales. It's a notable accomplishment🏅

It took 256 Days.

It's been a quick (yet long) road to get to this point, featuring:
💥Record Breaking Events
🚧Platform Scale Issues
🌎300k+ New Users

Thread on how we got here🔻
@nbatopshot
🗓️Let's start October 1, 2020. Open Beta.

First Day of the @NBA Finals.

🏆The Finals + their subsequent double pack drop was the biggest event yet on TS.

The Marketplace peaked at $79k in 24H and was followed by an off-season lull

It took 2+ months to hit that figure again⏳
Dec 22: With new season came the @raf_tyler promo (first with a player)

Start of 2021 also featured:
🎄First Legendary S2
📛Rookie Badge Blog
🛒Hours-long sell outs of S2 Base Packs (shocking!)

Below is a chart from Jan 15. Everyone was excited.

But it was just starting...
Many people credit the @BalesFootball blog with being the linchpin that started it all.

It dropped Jan 19💣

Short term, the flurry of newcomers was astonishing. The MP peaked 6 days later on January 24 with a $7M day🚀

Long term, it had just begun...
Zooming out, Jan 19-24 was but a blip.

The 3-week dip that followed saw pack drop + MP woes😡 It was painful.

But it was a build up to the true explosion:

🗓️Feb 15-18 | All major NA sports outlets cover TS
🗓️Feb 18 | @joshhart becomes aware of TS
🗓️Feb 19 | All 15000 CC go LE
By end of February there had been 1.8M+ transactions on the MP🛒

And NBA Top Shot was mainstream📺

So much that the @NBA announced the 2021 Rising Stars🌟 roster on the platform.

Heck it even got a mention from @FriedgeHNIC🏒

But all was not peachy... https://twitter.com/TheReelPhilD/status/1365843986464784387
Through both Feb + March, the platform was mired with performance issues.

Top Shot had to deal with major scale problems like:
🔴Slow withdrawal access
🔴Bots and DDOS
🔴Multi account/gaming

And of course: Pack Drop problems📦. In less than a month, a queue system was born.
Sidenote: The issues are ongoing. They are improving but long way to go.

Some believe there is lack of objectivity from community voices. Personally I will do my best there, and think it's OK to be excited long term but openly discuss short term issues. We must show both sides.
March 2021: Tons happened

😡Issues noted above
⭐️3x different All Star Game Drops (Supply Saturation)
🏪Marketplace Cool Downs (Volume killer)
📉Overall Market Dip

And DESPITE ALL THAT we still saw:
🔥Multiple $10M+ days on MP
🛍️180k+ Unique Buyers (most of them real)
April 2021: Modern Day

🎁Gifting is revamped
🏦40k+ have withdrawal access
🕵️Bad actors being exposed

And even on a quiet day we are seeing $2M in volume.

More importantly, it really feels like this community has galvanized🫂 Those that are still here will stay long term.
What Comes Next🔮

Of course I will say this: the future is bright.

🏆Playoffs are 6 weeks away
📢Marketing might soon be "turned on"
🤫Whispers of added Utility for the Moments

The next $500M will happen faster than we think. And likely way smoother.

Enjoy the ride.
