Sony has spent the past 26 years creating, fostering and pandering to a mentality in its fans that it’s never about the game, but the piece of plastic the game is on and how much it sells that matter. To take pride in those sales & exclusivity.
Sony fans have grown to be almost coltishly loyal to that piece of plastic. How much it sells and how much a game exclusive to it sells is *the most important thing to that fanbase*, not the games themselves. Quality, fun, etc are secondary/tertiary concerns.
Knowing that if anyone wants to play certain games they’d have to purchase “their” piece of plastic is the single biggest source of pride to their fanbase. Why? Because Sony themselves panders to this mentality.
They understand that their fanbase gets angry if “their” games go to PC. Then it’s no longer “exclusive” in their eyes. And they care about that. Deeply. That petty elitism of needing “their” piece of plastic to play. It’s vitally important.
Sony has seen how their cultish fanbase responded to Game Pass. Endless, spiteful vitriol at “free” games that you can’t own (you can), but everyone clearly sees it’s simply jealousy. Sony knows they should copy Game Pass but they fear their fanbases reaction.
After decades of holding to the outdated “Whoever sells the most pieces of plastic wins” mentality, Microsoft has outmaneuvered them with putting games on PC/Mobile/Cloud and Game Pass. Sony should obviously copy but fears their fanbase. They’re stuck.
I said that before 2021 is out, Sony will follow Microsoft’s policy of putting their games on PC day and date of the PS5 release and have a Game Pass copy. I hold to that. Why? They’re leaving billions of dollars on the table. MS is raking it in.

Sony has to move.
