I was out late last night for a night ride with a friend. We do this about once a week and its a pretty nice and relaxing event and sometimes we see some cool stuff. Coyotes have been a highlight before.
Last night went a little bit different. We were making our way back via North Point Park and the Zakim pedestrian bridge and came across a face down cyclist at the base of the bridge.
I quickly laid my bike down and sprung into action to assess the situation. Guy was in rough shape and out of it. While he was wearing a helmet, it was very clear that he was concussed and I had my friend call 911 for some help as I talked to the guy and cont'd to check him out
Concussion memory issues are rough but I was able to get some key information and get in contact with one of his loved ones to come pick him up. The very nice bike was totaled. Sadly carbon, but really the guy's health is more important.
Now, It's been some time since we called 911, and the guy is ready to go. My friend stayed at the scene as we carefully relocate to the street corner just up the hill.
20-30 minutes pass before an EM vehicle shows up. It was a state cop, maskless, completely inept for this situation. He was asked to put on a mask twice by my friend at the location, and then again by me thrice before he actually put on a mask.
He hardly listened to me about the situation at hand and was more interested in getting this guy out of his responsibility. Once he found out that a loved one was on their way, he requested them to be called again to make sure, then told me I could leave
When I refused to leave, as I did not want leave my new friend, he got quite interested about whether I had ID on me or not. He never asked for injured person's name. Just where he is from and where he is going.
To the point of the cop's interest, when I said I did have ID but refused to take it out to hand it to him and rather elected to verbally identify myself he was very into taking notes. He lost all interest in who the man was that I was trying to help.
The ambulance requested never showed up. The loved one was able to make it there almost faster than the State Police. My friend told me when he requested medical help for a person bleeding from the head under the Zakim bridge, 911 routed him to Brighton police.
I am continually disappointed in how State cops act/carry themselves and especially in how they respond to need and non-need situations that occur at North Point park, Lynch Family Skatepark, and Paul Revere Landing Park.
