What’s in a name?

— PangPang is the ship name of #IanPangilinan and #PaoloPangilinan

First of all, they are NOT related. They just happen to share the same surname. “Pang” comes from “Pangilinan” hence “PangPang.”

Other ship name: #KarlVlad (for their GSP characters).

Fandom name: Pancakes / Neighbors.

— “Pancakes” came from a scene in GSP E01 when Vlad called Karl “pancake” to convince Ate Judit that they are indeed together.*

— “Neighbors” originated from the 1st teaser that showed the scene during KarlVlad’s 1st encounter.

* Is “pancake” just a thing within the show or is it a personal thing, too You’ll find out later. First, let us get to know Paolo and Ian a bit!

IAN PANGILINAN

birthday: 09/09/1997
alma mater: ateneo de manila university (management engineering)

— has an extensive background in acting and theater and was part of school productions like “Spring Awakening”; before GSP he was also set to play Rovic in “Tabing Ilog.”

PAOLO PANGILINAN

birthday: 05/09/1996
alma mater: university of the philippines - diliman (sports science)

currently studying to be a doctor in st. luke’s

— a cheerleader, gymnast, and dancer; was part of the UP Pep Squad; appeared in commercials like McDo.

A little story about PangPang’s casting as KarlVlad for #GayaSaPelikula

Ian and Pao first met through a Zoom call. The prod team talked to Pao first and made him standby for a bit as they talk to Ian. To see if they have chemistry, Pao and Ian were made to talk to each other during the call and it was instant spark

166-167 | It also feels like fate because Pao and Ian apparently sent in their applications almost at the same time.

Ian was first at 166, and Paolo at 167.

During Direk Takes E06, Paolo revealed that for their first screen test for GSP, Pao and Ian’s first irl encounter was when they were both lost in BGC and couldn’t find the venue.

This was also shared by Gege in a tweet. In the end, they looked for the venue together.

Getting To Know Ian and Pao

— One of the reasons why #PangPang was chosen to play KarlVlad is bcos the prod wanted to find actors who will also carry #GayaSaPelikula’s advocacy.

For Paolo, who worked mostly in commercials before, getting a role in a series like GSP is an opportunity to show that a story like this is possible for gay people.

“For me, Gaya Sa Pelikula is not a product.”

Making sure that his characters live has always been Ian’s goal as an actor. He talked about how gay characters are usually written as caricatures in PH media, so being able to play a role that truly portrays their real experiences is a huge honor for him.

PangPang during #GayaSaPelikula filming (my favourite)

— GSP filming is pretty unique bcos it was shot during the lockdown due to the pandemic. To be able to continue their workshop and filming, PangPang quarantined together in Gege’s house.

Since GSP had a cohabitation hijink as part of the story, PangPang living together for a few weeks helped them build a dynamic that would be helpful when they film.

But also, they had so much fun living together (they said!) anyway and got the chance to become really close.

The banter about Pao being a horrible cook continues.

PangPang would talk about this a lot in interviews. Ian is the one who cooks and Pao is the one who washes the dishes.

They also talked about how living together is fun. With Ian adding, “I think we had too much fun.”

Since Ian did not bring a lot of clothes for the quarantine, he had to borrow Pao’s clothes hehehehe

As early as their quarantine period, Ian has always had trouble keeping his hand to himself. You would later on find out as you go deeper into this thread.

The end of their quarantine happened to fall on Ian’s bday. On their last day, Paolo woke up really early to cook pancakes for Ian as a birthday gift.
