MILAN’S PROJECT: A THREAD
Throughout last few months I have thought about making this thread. I wanted to make a time line on how limited we are in terms of resources. Presenting it to you in a timeframe of how things have unfolded.
HISTORY
Back when Milan was saved from bankruptcy by Berlusconi, we had an owner who was passionate and had the wealth (Berlusconi’s net worth is $7.8 Billion dollars) to take Milan to the top. Until he sold to the Chinese, Berlusconi was the wealthiest football team single owner
We broke the transfer record for the highest transfer fees paid multiple times to add to a talented Italian core in the team in the form of Maldini and Baresi.
With such a virtuous team Milan under the stewardship of Sacchi with his maverick ideas were able to dazzle the world with their style of football along with winning trophies trouncing Real Madrid 5-0 in a UEFA semifinal.
Under Berlusconi in the 2000’s Milan had one of the best teams in the world, best coach in the world and one of the best medical practitioners in the world. In 2003 Milan was one of the richest teams in the world along with Manchester United and Real Madrid earning 200M/season
PRESENT
In 2018, when Milan were taken over by Elliot from the messy Chinese ownership they gave one last try to spend and boost Milan into the UCL but as we all know Leonardo fucked up and mis-spent 200M on Piatek,Paqueta, Laxalt, Samu Castillejo, Higuain and Caldara.
Milan, in the summer of 2018 had just appealed a ban against participation in the UEFA Europa league 2018/19 for failing to follow Financial Fair Play rules in past ownership tenures.
In 2019, Milan in an agreement with UEFA agreed to sit out of Europe in exchange for partial relaxation of FFP.
In the 2019/20 season with the influx of a pandemic hit economy Milan made a total loss of 195M, the second highest in Europe just behind Roma.
This meant that Milan had to improvise in the transfer market and this led to Milan making many loan deals and sold Suso and Paqueta for a good amount.
17 years later while United and Madrid earn close to a billion while Milan still earn 200M. This is the bedrock of all of our problems
FUTURE
History and current status of Milan have given us a fair idea about how crippled we are financially.
In a day and age where agents dictate terms for players and with players earning close to 100M euros along with other emoluments the transfer market has become increasingly complex.

Maldini clearly said in an interview that Milan do not have the economic power to compete with the big clubs for transfers.
Milan would have to participate in 4-5 years of Champions league consecutively to make big purchases https://twitter.com/MilanEye/status/1369993340482117637?s=20
This has a large impact on sporting decisions within the club and the vision of the club. Milan cannot bring the players who are the height of their career or the most sought out players in the world
This would mean that Milan would need to extensively scout and comb markets to find players that not just fit their system but have potential to grow.
But Milan once again face competition from teams like Leipzig, Salzburg, Leicester City, Atalanta and other Bundesliga clubs who already have a scouting structure in place since a few years while Milan are new into the scouting market.
This means that even if Milan get a coach that is ambitious and has a great track record they will not be able to attract the best players to match the coach’s requirements
This presents a very big problem to Milan’s project and does not allow to get off at the desired pace of fans and for a passionate manager like Maldini.
Lack of resources coupled with no Champions league for 8 years has made Milan a not so attractive destination. It is a slow rebuild one made more slower thanks to Milan’s predecessors where no investments or no proper direction to investments were made.
Milan just could not adapt to Modern football
