#EMA investigating possible link between J&J #COVID19 vaccine & blood clots . Based on 4 cases reported so far. J&J vaccine uses an Ad26 vector and AstraZeneca ChimpAd vector. Worth remembering that every drug, vaccine or medical intervention can cause very rare adverse effects which may not be picked up by large phase 3 clinical trials. These events show up in post-marketing surveillance when the product has been delivered to millions.

This doesn't mean that the intervention is bad or useless. In some cases it means there needs to be additional guidance on how the intervention is used and heightened vigilance on possible rare adverse effects. The J&J and A/Z vaccines remain excellent #covid19 vaccines.

I'll take the example of heparin a popular anticoagulant we use frequently in hospitalized patients. On occasion in some individuals it may cause HIIT- heparin induced thrombocytopenic thrombosis, a serious rare but treatable complication. We still use heparin w monitoring!

At the end of the day the world needs #COVID19 vaccines to end this epidemic .
To date 726M vaccines have been delivered worldwide, the largest global mass vaccination of my life-time.
Rare adverse effects will of course appear with that many people being vaccinated.

This doesn't mean we throw the baby out with the bath water.
It should mean we learn how to use the tools at hand (vaccines) in the best and safest way possible.
