#postdoc scholars are a valuable part of any academic community. They bring years of knowledge and experience. Their work is an important part of any university or department's success. But, b/c postdocs are neither student nor faculty, they sometimes fall thru the cracks.
Postdocs are often similarly qualified and at the same stage in life as new assistant faculty. Their need for a competitive salary reflective of their education and experience, along with benefits such as child care, parental leave, health (etc.) are the same. @AcademicChatter
But, postdoc contracts are usually short, and it is near impossible for any one person to enact major policy change during that time. A union, however, can be the consistent presence that supports each new generation of postdocs.
On Monday, April 12, postdocs at the University of Guelph will vote about whether to unionize. The @uofg Postdoc Society has been working toward this vote for over a year, and I'm excited to see the many postdocs who support this movement. @uswdistrict6 @UA_magazine @CAPSACSP
If we succeed, we will join several other #ontario universities whose postdocs have unionized and now enjoy better working conditions, training opportunities, and support than before. UoG postdocs deserve the same. Please join us in supporting our group toward the final vote.
Better support for postdocs means better research, teaching, mentorship, and quality of life. A union provides a framework for all to work together toward those outcomes. #union
