/ It's Friday and I thought I'd pick your brains for something I've been thinking about @mr_corcorana @lina_skora @micahgallen @hohwy @anilkseth. I don't know much about predictive coding / interoceptive inference, writing something and want to make sure it's not BS! Let's go!
/ We measured HRV and interoceptive awareness using the cardiac discrimination task. We also had participants do a resonance breathing task and checked whether that improves interoceptive accuracy
/ What resonance breathing does is increase and reorganize HRV at the resonant frequency of the cardiovascular system (0.1Hz), and variation in RR intervals is tightened around a patterned oscillation.
/ We found that, at baseline, HRV negatively correlates with interoceptive accuracy. Totally unexpected. Now, from a predictive coding perspective, could this mean that the less variability in HR, the more precise estimates about subsequent HBs are, facilitating intero acc?
/ We also found that the more HRV increases at the 0.1Hz freq range during resonance breathing, the more intero acc increases. This may reflect increases in vagal afferent signalling, BUT could also be seen from a interoceptive inference perspective.
/ If HRV power is reorganized around a predictable oscillatory pattern (0.1Hz) then it becomes easier for the brain to make predictions about subsequent HBs. It's not the increase in HRV per se, but the tightening around this frequency that drives the increase. Makes sense?
/ Resonance breathing would just reduce interoceptive prediction errors. And that got me thinking.
/ Mental health disorders are characterized by decreased HRV, an interpretation for that is that dampened HRV decreases prediction errors, facilitating performance under uncertainty and stress.
/ Now, resonance breathing is also used as a therapeutic tool in addiction, depression, anxiety etc. It improves cognitive performance and emotional processing in pops that show reduced HRV. The therapeutic effect is attributed to higher baroreflex gain and vagal signalling.
/ WHAT IF!? Resonance breathing also works by increasing the predictability of HR oscillations and reducing interoceptive prediction errors 🤔? Does any of this make any sense?? I know this is long a thread, thank you if you made it to the end! 😅🙏
