#VolcanoCb and #volcanic ash cloud and detected spreading east from #LaSoufriere in latest #GOES16 imagery from the @NOAA/ @UWCIMSS VOLCAT system.

Animation of #GOES16 GeoColor imagery from @CIRA_CSU showing the #LaSoufrière #eruption and #volcanic ash plume.
First look at #Sentinel5P #Tropomi SO₂ data for the April 9 #LaSoufrière #eruption. Relatively small amount of SO₂ detected (~2 kilotons) heading east over the #Atlantic; similar to the April 1979 eruption. @CopernicusEU @jvernier82 @soufriere_hills #LaSoufriereEruption
Second explosive #eruption of #LaSoufrière at ~19:00 UTC on April 9. Notably reddish-brown color to the #volcanic ash (also in the earlier eruption) - possibly older/oxidized #lava dome material being incorporated into the plume? @NOAA #GOES16/ #GOESEast data from @CIRA_CSU.
#GOES16 image at 21:10 UTC shows ongoing #volcanic ash venting from #LaSoufrière; leading edge of ash plume about to cover #Barbados at dusk.
Much stronger SO₂ signal in this second #eruption. Red denotes upper-level SO₂ (plus water vapor and ice) in this #GOES16 RGB composite (21:20 UTC); might have to wait a few hours for quantitative SO₂ retrievals. @jvernier82 @CIMSS_Satellite @airesEO
The #LaSoufriere #eruption currently showing no signs of abating through the overnight hours. The #volcanic plume stands out clearly in this @NOAA #GOES16 SO₂ RGB composite (red = upper level SO₂). Imagery from @CIRA_CSU
IR @NASA AIRS SO₂ retrievals measured ~0.4 Tg SO₂ in the #LaSoufrière #eruption cloud. This is the largest tropical explosive eruption (in terms of SO₂ emission) since Ambae ( #Vanuatu) in 2018, and #LaSoufrière is still erupting as of 13:30 UTC Apr 10. https://twitter.com/airesEO/status/1380849679219363841?s=20
There is now a @NOAA #GOES16 Mesoscale sector over #LaSoufrière, providing imagery with 1-minute cadence. This animation from @CIRA_CSU is from ~13:00-14:00 UTC on April 10, showing the ongoing #eruption. @BBCAmos
