The Duke of Edinburgh served in the @RoyalNavy throughout #WW2 aboard the battleship HMS Valiant at the Battle of Cape Matapan & the evacuation of Crete, the destroyers HMS Wallace for the invasion of Sicily, & HMS Whelp for the surrender of Japan, commanding HMS Magpie 1950-1951 https://twitter.com/navalhistorian/status/1380481572248387585
The Duke of Edinburgh's connection with the @RoyalNavy began early, having famously been evacuated from Greece with his family, aged 18 months, in a cot made from an orange box, aboard the light cruiser HMS Calypso (a near-sister ship of @HMSCaroline) in 1922.
