The last decade was among the lowest for new housing units built in #SalemMA. Values, rents, and prices are up because supply is down, not because we're overbuilt. Claims that our city is "overdeveloped" are deliberate attempts to mislead and frighten people.
Why does it feel #SalemMA is building a lot of housing? A lot has to do with visibility of those units. The 3k+ units built in the 1970s-1980s were largely single family homes in quiet neighborhoods. These days, units are built downtown & along the corridors, esp. Blubber Hollow.
There's a real conversation to be had about how Salem shapes new housing, where, and under what conditions. But let's be truthful with people, let facts drive the discussion, and set aside the fearmongering rhetoric. #SalemMA deserves better.
