1. I grew up sheltered from a lot of the conflict here. I was brought up Catholic, went to a Catholic primary school where I was the minority (1 of 7 catholics) in my class which was rare in the late 90s and early 00s and attended a protestant grammar.
2. I lived in a relatively middle class area and was brought up to treat everyone the way I wish to be treated. When I started teaching I realised the true extent of my sheltered upbringing and how privileged I was.
3. Young people are collateral damage in this violence. A lot of them did not get the educational, social and holistic support I did. A lot of them also didn't get to mix with people different to them. This is a large part of the problem.
4. Having taught in integrated, Protestant and Catholic schools and having been involved in Shared Education with P3s, children do not see divides, they don't see prejudice. They see another kid they want to play with when they're simply allowed to do so.
5. It's adults with their own lived experiences, prejudices + ignorance that instill it in kids and its vital that youth outreach and schools play a part in helping our young people. But the gov have to take responsibility for their part in all this. Take leadership and wise up
