We shouldn’t have been doing grades this year. It is so preposterous. Passing the course by showing progress and growth would have been so much more humane and sustainable for the kids and for the teachers. This rat race of assignments/points/ridiculous letter grades is cruel.
It’s the end of the quarter and I find myself stressed at missing assignments, doing everything I can to help the kids in this quest to submit enough work to earn the points to get a “good grade” and both of us are trapped on this wheel that we didn’t have to be on.
And none of it is even “real.” What even is a “B” are you kidding me. This is what gets me. If you ask me about a child I can tell you a hundred things about their wit, talent, humor, writing, voice, everything but THIS FAKE LETTER IS WHAT WE HAVE TO PUT DOWN
And what it takes MY students to earn a “C” might literally be 10x more arduous and challenging than it takes students in a different school to get an “A.” So many additional barriers and hurdles to clear. But one looks like effort and the other looks like settling. Average. UGH
