Short thread about the #omer which is a Jewish period of counting 49 days between Pesach/Passover & Shavuot/Feast of Weeks (the cheese-eating festival commemorating the Ten Commandments scene among other things). Every night when it has got dark you say a blessing & count the day
If you forget you can catch up the next day but without the blessing. It's all said in Hebrew & I haven't missed a blessing since 1999 (don't wanna talk about it). Every time the phone rings I expect it to be Guinness but I guess there are people doing way better than me at this!
Sefirat Ha'omer (counting the omer) is evidently one of my obsessions but this year I've heard a lot more about it than usual, possibly coz people appreciate any excuse to count the days at the moment. Day 33 is special & you're meant to have a bonfire singsong but #ruleofsix
My dad makes me a chart every year - here are a few of the designs. I used to collect if we went to Manc 4 Pesach but now he sends in the post w some slight assembly required i.e. glue the cereal packet onto the back, insert treasury tag...
Don't tell him but this year he's got competition from @MasortiJudaism who've sent out this fab omer counting thingy featuring thoughts, quotes & amazing pics like this one which is why I decided to write this thread on day 12. I'd like to credit this photo but I dunno who by/of
It is certainly brightening my day. The calendar is produced by Rabbi Zahavit Shalev (who I know and love) & Rabbi Adam Zagoria-Moffet (never knowingly met him but have heard much of his wisdom dispensed plus obvs what a fab name) & is built around middot which are like traits.
At primary school we had 'middah of the month' w whole school divided into 4 teams, working on the play, magazine, souvenir & charity projects respectively on theme of the middah-kindness, responsibility, humility etc housepoints 2 b had & stars got 'crown of a good name' badge
Last night at niggun workshop @cantor_banter taught a beautiful new tune for the omer intention. At school we had a different tune for similar words: And you shall count 4 yourselves from the morrow of the Sabbath when u bring the omer offering, 7 complete Sabbaths...
