I cant believe I almost got scammed on gumtree!!!

(This is quite a long story, if you are lazy or don't have the time to read, you could skip to the pictures I will attach so you can see the type of documents the guy forged and be on the lookout for such.)

So what happened was, I posted an ad on gumtree to sell a used laptop and this guy immediately replied showing interest (first red flag). Then he started telling me how he wanted to get it for his daughter and asked where i stay so he could get it now if possible.

I thought he was just eager and maybe has been waiting for a deal like this (I was so naive).

Since it was already evening I told him I'm not comfortable making transactions at night (meeting up and stuff) so let's do it tomorrow.

Hayke fine, he agrees.. asks me to not reply to anyone else from gumtree since its a done deal. Immediately after he says that I get another text from another potential buyer( could've been a scam too but I cant confirm).

He was so eager, told me he's interested and would like to see pictures of the laptop( was kinda confused since I did post pictures with my ad ) .

So I tell him, nhaa I've got a buyer already but if the buyer is playing me then ill contact him and sell it to him instead.

The second guy now calls, tries to get me to sell to him , tells me he is willing to up the offer even . Mogul was just excited cause chelete is increasing. But cause I'm generally a nice person I don't want to just blow the first guy off so I get back to him

I tell him that while I was telling another guy that I have a potential buyer he upped the offer, so if he could also up the offer to match his i would rather sell it to him than the second guy. The first guy then called me immediately.

offer. Then he asked me where do I stay, told him in Northriding, then he said perfect cause he stays in Lonehill. He tell me ba let's conclude this deal, in the morning he will transfer the money then will then fetch the laptop. Hayke the girl slept happy thinking

about what she'll do when she gets all that money .

Next day comes (I generally wake up late but today I woke up early), ready for MY money . He texts me after 8, greeting me, I greet back. He then calls me, I only saw a missed call so I call him back.

He then tells me he is about to send me the money and his ID certified copy so that I feel more safe( I had sent him my account number and the name of the complex i stay in yesterday). I reply and I'm like go ahead boo, ndi ready .

He also says that he will send a driver to come fetch it.

Hayke I wait , thinking ill get an sms with notification ethi money in kanti little did I know. Jiki jiki few minutes later I get two document send to me, the certified copy and a "money transfer confirmation from Absa"

Ngoku I start to get worried, firstly he sents a certified copy that has color . And mna I dont know much about Online banking receipts of payments but that one was written that money is transfered from a COMPANY (Pramaia Panel beaters) and not a person . Ngoku I start to

So ke after a few min he calls telling me he will send a person to come fetch it. I start thinking, and I can see I'm not fine with this so I ask him to send me his live address to see if he is really at lonehill, then he first says he doesn't know how to do it, he's not tech

savvy. (Hawu , now I'm like how can this person who speaks so eloquently not know how to sent a mere location on whatsapp ). I start insisting, telling him Its only two clicks away and ill guide him if need be. He then tell me he's not home and is at work.

( So I left the location thing, I dont know why I ddnt insist to check if where he is really where the company is based.

So I tell him I'm only comfortable giving him the laptop once the payment reflects since there's no additional layer of security and that I cant just

trust documents since they can be forged.

Yhoo hayke hell broke loose, we started going back and forth. He started becoming angry saying why ddnt I say this before, why am I being wishy washy all of the sudden, so I waited for him to send the money then I do such things.

I responded telling him I dont trust him, too many red flags and I need to protect myself here. Mna I'm willing to video call him now, showing him the product im selling and going to the entrance where I live BUT I'm not going to give him the laptop until the money reflects in

my account.

He kept on repeating ba yena he is a business man, he also buys stuff like cars, he also gave me his work address what more do I want.. I kept quiet cause I'm was getting angry that we are not progressing, and beginning to think he's taking me for a fool.
He could

see that I was not willing to do what he wants and i think he then gave up and dropped the call.

Cause I'm this nice person, i still have hope that the guy was legit and that he was mad cause he thought im the one trying to scam him. So just to verify him further I look up the

company in the proof of payment and the address corresponds to the one he typed out ( I thought to myself that it doesn't mean anything and that anyone can search a company name and find its address) .

So I started thinking, then I decided to call the company and ask them

if such a person works there. I called them and a nice lady answered me, I asked her if that certain person works there, she told me from the documents she's looking at, she can't find the person I'm looking for. Then she let's me know that some employees may not be on that sheet

so she will forward me to the owner/manager of the company (not sure what he is exactly). That guy was also very nice to me, after I gave him the name he told me he recognises the name and the guy doesn't work there, he has received calls before from people the guy scammed.

Yhoo!!! I was so relieved, guilt gone and I was irritated and angry.. mostly cause he wasted my time and cause of him I had already taken my ad down. Now I had to start from scratch again.

I'll reply with the documents he sent, so you can see the type of stuff he sends when he wants to earn your trust.

He might use a different name and company name next time he does it . Please spread for awareness, you could save someone the headache and heartache on your tl.
