Some of the reasons why non-profits exist is because the arrogance of business has created a huge rift between rich and poor in the society. You get healthcare only if you have money, because public healthcare system is non-existent & is now called private healthcare system. 1/n
If you are part of the hitherto ubiquitous middle-class, double whammy - you pay taxes, while the corporations you work for get a tax break, ironically at the excuse of paying you more, but in fact, you keep paying them to keep your job. 2/n
Your children get an education only if you have money, because public education set up using your taxes is now private education, & is not meant for your children. Now they too can have a bleak future of exploitation by the same corporations you work for all your life. 3/n
All this while, the corporation that failed to invest in the education & growth of the employee - you - starts to fail at its own core because the employees are not innovative or enthusiastic anymore. They’re reduced to robots, selling pipe dreams & Ponzi schemes. 4/n
The C-suite “pivots” & starts a “non-profit” entity, because their vast, interminable pool of business knowledge is all that is needed to start & run a non-profit. Then comes the excel sheets, & that god awful “competitive fundraising” idea. 5/n
Still, there is a lavish amount of arrogance leftover to preach to non-profits who genuinely started with the idea of improving the lives of underserved communities. If it was something that made a sensible difference in the life of a non-profit, it would be understandable. 6/n
But how would the ideas of a failed system, from a failed corporation, by a failed business executive unhappy with their own existence be of any worth for someone who is actually working at the grassroots day-in-day-out with all the sincerity in their work? 7/n
Ok, let’s give the benefit of doubt to the business people. Still, what is the excuse for suggesting that non-profits submit to the same dumb (I’m being very kind) business ideals of mergers & acquisitions, shareholding patterns, & blind scale without purpose or direction? 8/n
Yet, the preaching continues from the saddle atop the high horse, along with the esoteric experience of having “transformed the lives” of those lesser mortals in the non-profits during that 2-hour session of pure, unadulterated, useless business baloney. 9/n
So, thank you for the “business advice”, it’s what brought us here as a society. Let’s try something different. Let’s start with empathy, let’s invest in bringing education (not just literacy), art, technology, talk about healing & recovery from trauma, justice & equality. 10/n
And, for the love of God, please don’t advise that bugger making minimum wage to donate his entire month’s salary because you donated your 6 figure, 1 month salary at a fancy fundraising gala with your friends that your corporation sponsored. 11/n
