Nigerians need to learn that Stand up Comedy is a different form of art. We stress our comedians too much
. From organisers,to audience,to even the hosts. With this thread I can share a few tips that may help us get the best out of stand up. It's not always the comedians fault.

For the organisers, if you are organising a comedy show or something that would have stand up comedy performances, it's important to have a closely knitted sitting arrangement. Where everyone is facing the stage. The aim is to limit every form of distraction.
A comedian shouldn't be on stage when food is being served fgs. Someone even called up a comedian during buffet
you wan kill am? If it's a comedy show, it's best you don't use tables. If you must please make sure they are closely arranged and not sparse. Limit distractions

Let the sound be on point. Let there be a stage and let the light focus on the comedian. If it's not a comedy show, but you want a stand up comedian, make the arrangement with him in mind. Make sure he performs when everything is settled. HELP HIM WITH A GOOD TIME.
For the audience: please if you are going for a comedy show. Go with the mind to actually enjoy. Side talks distract the comedian and it distracts even people listening. If you come late, walk in as covertly as you can. It's not the time to stand up and be greeting people.
Even if it's not a comedy show. As soon as you hear it's stand up, act like it's a sermon in church. You will never enjoy proper stand up comedy if you are pressing your phone. In some major comedy shows in America, you can't access your phone in the hall. A round of applause,
Responses to questions and all round attention will make you enjoy yourself more. I'm not saying laugh if he is not funny, I'm saying he cannot be funny if you don't pay attention to him. He doesn't have to be Basketmouth b4 you sit up. Remember stand up comedy is like a sermon.
Finally the Hosts/MCs: if it's not a comedy show, please don't call the comedian when people are walking in or eating. When you want to call the comedian, set the tone of the audience. Tell them all these things I said the the previous slides. Encourage them to pay attention
And give a resounding round of applause etc. Nigerians actually hear word when we remind them. Let the comedian know before you call him up. Don't call him up suddenly,he needs to be mentally prepped. Don't introduce him like the other performers. Let people know he's a comedian
Finally finally
Comedians
Be good, have good jokes. Be around hours before your slot so that you can know the audience you are dealing with. Tweak your jokes to suit them. If you are faced with an audience that doesn't obey any of the things I'm saying, try to win them

You can compliment them, make them clap, do music jokes if you have (people really love music...ask kenny blaq
), or if it's allowed try and yab them but you have to do that well. If all these fails, well it's between you and God
Keep to time (it's not your special)

If you are bombing, wrap it up. It's okay to bomb, it happens to the best of us. Learn from your mistakes. Don't beat yourself up. Use trusted materials for paid gigs. If you want to test jokes in a comedy club, sandwich the new into the old (i advise). Overall, have fun on stage
In conclusion. It takes more than the comedian to make comedy work. Comedy needs attention. It's like a sermon. Nigerian comedians work extra hard because we have a bad show culture here. I hope and pray we get better. Thanks for coming to my Ted talk
