I love running businesses in The Sims 4 so for Week 15 of #GameplayFriday, I'm going to delve into being a business owner! From restaurants to retail, both owning and visiting, I love using these systems!

Many people struggle with playing with the retail system from Get To Work but personally, I've had a lot of enjoyment from it so far. I've got several Sims owning businesses now, so I'd like to delve into that today.

The first retail lot I built was The High Street, in Magnoliad Promenade. This lot features several different shops on the same lot, and is collectively owned by the Landgraab family.

When I first built the lot, I had Nancy Landgraab buy it and run it for a few days, to let me get a feel for running the business. It went surprisingly well and she actually turned over a reasonable profit in the first day!

I wanted to experiment with having a lot with multiple shops, to see how it went. The High Street has an antique shop, wellness shop, Mother & Baby shop, Music shop...

... and finally, the bookshop. Additionally, I have three ATMs to the side of one of the shops, for Sims to do some basic banking. Overall, the lot provides a one-stop-shop for a lot of the Sims basic needs.

I've had fun sending Sims to buy some basics from here when they need them. I used to do this in Sims 2, so I've been wanting to replicate that for a while.
For example, when Ethan and Hollie were expecting Jenna, all their nursery furniture came from here!

Similarly, when Daisy moved in with her sister, they went shopping for yoga mats and incense at The Hight Street.
Incidentally, Daisy also met Gerald here.

Ellie opened the charity shop, World United, in Newcrest. The shop is still quite small but Ellie's still managing to make a little profit each day and she gets quite busy!

The Petite Fleur Boutique in San Myshuno is currently owned by the Bjergsen family. Eventually, I will probably have somebody buy the shops from the family but right now, they own the best fashion shops in the region.

Not just anybody will be able to open up a business though in my game.
For anybody wanting to own their own shop, they will need an Economics degree. The main exception to this rule is charity shops; Ellie doesn't 'own' the shop, the proceeds go to 'charity'.

Since Ellie works in the Charity Branch of the Political career, she's considered a charity worker and in my game, any business own by a charity worker is a charity business. So the money in the business account NEVER gets transferred to Ellie's household funds.

Eventually, I'd love Emily Stanton to open a florist shop in Newcrest. However, she will need some knowledge and understanding, so I'll be having her take a degree in Economics before she can do that!

When it's released, I'll include Zero's custom Business degree for this. So to own a shop, you'll need either a degree in Business OR in Economics.
For a veterinary practice, you'll need a Veterinary medicine degree. https://www.patreon.com/posts/university-48692919

The only mod I use for running a retail business is the Ring Up Customers At Register by cLineLy. It looks lovely having customer queueing up at the register, just like Sims 2.

Ever since Dine Out was released, I've enjoyed creating, visiting and running restaurants. In my Daily Plumbob save, I have several active restaurants. These are 'NPC' restaurants; they're not owned by any Sim in the save and my Sims visit them often.

The only restaurant that is owned, so far, is The Sand Bar in Sulani. Gerald and Daisy opened this restaurant shortly after they were married and since their divorce, Gerald's committed to running it on his own.

Gerald takes on the capacity as a manager. My main gripe is that he can't be the Chef; he's in the culinary career and has a degree in Culinary Arts. And let's be honest, charisma isn't his strong point

I like to have Gerald and Daisy make the effort to greet their customers as they arrive at the restaurant, especially as it's fairly new. So far, I've found it fairly easy for them to have 3 or even 4 stars from each of their customers!

One trick I've found that works well with my NPC restaurants is multiple chefs and waiters; I rarely have problems with Sims not receiving their meals. The Sand Bar operates a little differently because it's owned by Gerald; so service is a little slower.

Now that Gerald and Daisy have divorced, Gerald will be running things on his own. The restaurant may not be able to open very often, since Gerald works full time. But if he gives up his job, he needs to work extra hard at being nice to his customers!

Again, like with the retail businesses, I have a 'rule' that in order to open up a restaurant, they need a degree in Culinary Arts, like Gerald. My reasoning is that they should have quite a bit of experience and knowledge before opening a restaurant

Most of my Sims, right now, don't have the money to buy their own house, let alone their businesses. So, using the SimCity Loans mod, I have the Sims take out a 'business loan' to afford to start their businesses.

This helps to add a little extra challenge to the business-owning. It's not going to be extremely profitable for a while because they have loans to pay off. So it pushes the Sim (and me) to work hard for the businesses to pay off.
