So, why exactly are they doing this? The reason the junta is cutting off all internet access in the country is quite simple – they don't want any form of communication between us and the world outside of Myanmar.
Aside from several anti-coup movements within the country, the junta knows that the one thing that would prevent them from completely seizing power is international pressure.
So, the first thing that they did on February 1 after detaining our elected leaders, was to cut off all internet access and cell service within the country. We couldn't even call our friends and relatives who were living in the same city to check on them.
Even so, we tried our best to spread awareness once we got our internet back and this had been effective because since then, there have been several international people and reporters speaking up about Myanmar here on twitter and on other platforms.
But so far, there has only been one major international news outlet that the junta has allowed into the country (under surveillance) so here is @clarissaward from CNN on the situation in Myanmar.
You can see in the video (and it HAS been proved) that they detained citizens who so much as spoke to Clarissa Ward. This is clear evidence of the military trying to silence us from speaking up.
Several celebrities, activists and essentially anyone who is anti-coup or is speaking up have been or are under threat of being detained. None of us are safe. https://twitter.com/misswhpt/status/1380017245909311488
To prevent us from speaking out, all forms of mobile data have been cut off for about three weeks, wireless broadband internet has been been out of service since last week, and fiber internet is limited to specific hours of the day.
And now the junta is going to shut down ALL internet within the country over the holidays – a span of 10 days. https://twitter.com/shwelaminygn2/status/1379692137869148164
They are doing everything in their power to silence us and we are doing everything we can to speak up, even if we are constantly at risk of being detained.
So, we need the international community to speak up about Myanmar. Please don't go quiet when we have, because we would never go quiet voluntarily.
